Honeymoon

One of the blogs I follow regularly, Betty Beguiles, is having a blog link up! I wasn't much into blogging when she talked about engagements or wedding dresses, but I decided to join in the fun this time!

Husbandy and I thought a lot about where we wanted to go for our honeymoon. Really the only vacations we had been on were to Florida to visit his family, so we were both very excited to get to plan something big! I had always wanted to go to the Caribbean so we looked into all inclusive resorts there, we looked at fun places around the US like Hawaii or Colorado, but what we finally decided on was Europe!

We quickly figured out that deciding on Europe was the easy part! There is SO MUCH to see, so we had no idea where to go. After asking around and me thinking back on the trip I took to Europe the summer before, we decided on a Western European cruise. This worked perfectly because Husbandy had never been to Europe and I had never been on a cruise.

After our wedding we had to wait two weeks before we could leave for our honeymoon because Husbandy was in school and had a semester to finish! It was nice to be able to get our house in order, however. The morning of our flight, my mom picked us up from our apartment, and wouldn't you know it, there was a ton of traffic on our way to the airport! I was starting to get worried that we would miss our flight, but little did I know what was awaiting us at the airport. As we drove up we looked into the terminal and saw the longest line we'd ever seen! We walked up to the door that had our airline's name on it and a person who worked at the airport said, "Are yall flying Lufthansa?"  "Yes."  "You'll need to use those doors down there, this line hasn't moved in 30 minutes." Oh great, this is just awesome, now we were sure to miss our flight!

(More line to the left)

Our nerves calmed a little bit when we found out everyone in front of us, and behind for that matter, were on our flight. However, we had a connecting flight in Frankfurt we had to make, so that we could get to Barcelona, so that we could get to our ship before it left! Apparently the problem was Lufthansa's computer systems were down and they were having to do EVERYTHING manually! Husbandy and I came up with a lot of ways we thought would be more efficient than their system, and eventually they figured one of them out and we got on our plane.

Lucky for us, our layover in Frankfurt was decently long, and despite the fact the Germans were freaked out by the hair dryer in my bag, we made our flight to Barcelona. Once there, we somehow depicted to our non-English speaking cab driver we needed to get to the big boat on the water and made it to our cruise line, where they greeted us with champagne. (I'm still convinced the cab driver knew exactly what we were saying and laughing at us the whole way. I mean really, why would a cab driver, working the airport, not speak English?)

Our cruise was so relaxing! Our first day was a day at sea and spent most of it in our room catching up on sleep! From then on, we were on the move. Our itinerary included Malta, Napoli, Capri and Sorrento, Rome, Florence and Pisa, Cannes, and Barcelona. Since we didn't get to spend a lot of time in Barcelona, we planned an extra day there after our cruise. Everywhere we went had so much history and was absolutely beautiful! Husbandy and I especially enjoyed our time in Vatican City! It was an absolutely amazing feeling to be standing together in St. Peter's Basilica. We were disappointed to learn the Sistine Chapel was closed for the day, but it did give us more time to walk around the city and more time for gelato. We roaming the city we stopped in Pizza Navona and bought a beautiful painting that hangs in our living room. It was also in Rome we almost missed our train to get back to Civitavecchia. Apparently, one day in Rome is not enough (duh), so everyone waits until the last minute to leave. This is a problem when five different cruise lines leave from the same port at the same time.

I could write eight blogs posts about our honeymoon, one for each day. But I won't bother you with that. I've already got it all documented in a scrap book I made, plus the hundreds of pictures we took. Other highlights did include a bus tour around Malta, going into the Blue Grotto in Capri, lots of gelato, the "Happy Happy, Wakey, Wakey" guy on our ship, amazing sunsets, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, not getting sea sick, La Familia in Barcelona, Fat Tire Bike Tour, taking a picture of us kissing in all the cities we visited, Husbandy's "frying of fish" dinner in Cannes which turned out to be more of the bait than the fish we were expecting, all you can eat food, getting lost in the streets of Italy, Galiano wanting to show us "his city of Napoli", the Cannes Film Festival, and so much more.

It certainly wasn't a sit on the beach and do nothing honeymoon, but why do that when you have the vacation time and you've planned on splurging!

Really Good Read

After reading the below post, I realized how thankful I am for NFP. Even greater, I realized how thankful I am for Husbandy and how much he loves and respects me. It takes a lot for a man to be able to see the good in abstinence within marriage. It's not always easy, but it's so fulfilling. I am lucky to have him. I am also so encouraged by all my friends and family who have also chosen NFP. It has been an absolute blessing to be able to share stories, methods, questions, frustrations, and triumphs with them. I love you all.

The following post was originally posted on Bad Catholic.

(Got this from a wonderful woman over email, who prefers to remain anonymous. I love this, because it mirrors the path of so many women to the Church's teachings! Read it!)

When I was younger, I thought I was a revolutionary. Like most other people in my generation, I was encouraged to be different. I was encouraged to challenge the status quo for my own good and take control of my life. The third-wave feminists behind magazines like Bust! and organizations like “VOX” (aka Planned Parenthood) told me to reclaim my own sexual freedom and identity from a lifetime of sexual oppression. I didn’t think about how organizations such as this make some serious profits off of sexually active females. They convinced me that I needed to overcome a lifetime of sexual repression…long before I was even interested or even ready for sexual activity. They told me to challenge my religious beliefs and the morals my parents had taught me because it would liberate me. Smart as I thought I was, I fell for it. I fell for just about every single one of their lies.

They convinced me that I, still a virgin at age 20, was a victim of a male chauvinism. They fed me stories about the oppression of women through the years. They used the suffragettes as poster children for a movement that, in hindsight, would have probably shamed, shocked, or disgusted most of these women. These “pro-female” organizations presented themselves as a support line. They made themselves seem like they were intent on saving girls like me from a life of male oppression and outdated religious views that seemed to favor men. These people seemed so concerned about my well-being. I had no idea what they were all about. Comfortable as I was with these people, I soon started realizing that I was not completely like them. Supportive as they made themselves out to be, I began to notice how they reacted when they found out that I was a virgin.

Unlike promiscuity, virginity was not a choice for these people. Virgins were virgins because they didn’t know any better. They were virgins because they were victims to a sexist culture or religion. They were virgins because they could not make decisions for themselves. Who in the world would choose virginity, when there was so much fun you could have sleeping with anyone and everyone you wanted to sleep with (as long as “protection” was involved…).

Being a virgin meant that I was on my way to becoming a victim. My new buddies made me believe that I lived in a male-dominated world where men could be as promiscuous as they wished before marriage. According to these people, losing your virginity on your wedding night meant that you had failed as a woman. You had failed at trying to seek a man who could best satisfy you (because marriage means nothing to these people if the sex isn’t great). Saving yourself for marriage was turned into a game of Russian Roulette. You would never know if your husband really was “good enough” for you in bed and you would never know how many women he slept with before he married you. The only thing you would know was that you had saved yourself for a man who could turn out to be an unfaithful weasel (because that’s not sexist thinking). They never told me that there were good guys out there worth waiting for. They only told me that I could use sex as a tool to assure that I could control my own life…and any male I made the misfortune of marrying.

I listened to them and found myself sleeping with someone I had only known for a week. I didn’t think about the consequences when it happened. I didn’t even care that I barely knew him. As bad as this sounds and as much as it shames me to admit this, I thought only about myself. I thought about how I had just one-upped that loser I would one day marry. I thought about how I had just triumphed in the battle for sexual liberation. You see, by that point, these feminists had pretty much brainwashed me and I was doing exactly what they had taught me to do…using sex as a tool of empowerment. Forget about love. Forget about chastity. Forget about morals. This was my way of showing the world that I was not some mindless female. This was my way of getting back at my future husband for all the women he slept with before marriage. That is how twisted my mind had become following years of indoctrination by the media and this feminist movement.

After falling for the lies about sexual liberation, I fell for the next big lie. I fell for the idea of “protection.” As pro-life as I considered myself to be (pro-life as in “besides abortion, anything goes), I started doing the same things that often lead to abortions. I started thinking about pregnancy as a “risk,” rather than the creation of life….rather than a blessing. I used protection, but still found myself praying to God that I wasn’t pregnant. I still found myself racing to the local pharmacy for pregnancy tests. As much as the world seems to be convinced that condoms work 100% of the time…they don’t. They break. They are used improperly. Latex breaks down over time.

After a few runs to the pharmacy, I decided to be even more “responsible.” I decided to go on “the pill.” I convinced my worried conscience that I needed to take these hormones to correct some minor issues such as acne, amenorrhea, etc. I told myself that I was not using the pill to prevent pregnancy, but that’s really why I wanted to take it. I still remember going to the college health center and sitting down with a nurse practitioner. They were more concerned with the types of sexual activities I participated in than they were my own health. I was never told about side effects. I was never told about the risks because the pill was harmless. They told me that the pill contained natural hormones, that it was “safe and effective.” The safety of the pill, like that of any other drug, is based on the effects it has on the “average woman.” I was young and because of my young age, I was told that I had nothing to worry about.

I was told that I only needed to worry about the side effects when I turned 35…which was ages away. They never once considered double checking to see if I really was an “average woman.” They told me not to worry when I started getting migraines and massive bruises on my legs. They never bothered to look up the side effects to the pill when I voiced my concern. They never once checked my cholesterol levels, which turned out to be extremely high. They never even mentioned that the pill could affect cholesterol levels. I ended up finding all of this out myself. The health center didn’t really seem to care about my health. They were more concerned that I had enough pills during summer and winter vacation than they were of all these symptoms that started appearing. After all, they assured me, taking the pill was my way of ensuring that I would one day be fertile when I was ready to have kids.

Yes, the pill made my cycle regular…but it did not solve the problem. It only masked the problem. Aspirin may ease your aches and pains, but it does not fix a broken bone. In the same sense, as much as these pro-femme nurses tried convincing me otherwise, the pill wasn’t fixing anything. If anything, it was making things worse! Yet, I kept taking it. Who was I kidding? As much as I had tried in the beginning to convince myself otherwise, I had never taken the pill to take care of any health problems. It was a lie from the beginning. Therefore, even after suffering all these side effects and coming across lies that were too blatant for me to ignore, I kept taking the pill. At this point, however, I was more honest to myself. I did not even bother trying to convince myself any longer that I was taking the pill for health reasons. As much as it pained my conscience, I accepted the reality that I was taking (and had been taking it) simply to avoid pregnancy.

My conscience cringed at this realization. Therefore, I started to find any source I could to support the idea that I was not interfering with the life of any unborn children. The pharmaceutical companies selling me the drugs told me that I wasn’t interfering with any lives…because life required implantation. No implantation = no life= I’m still okay. Okay as I thought I was, my conscience knew better. Yet my conscience seemed to be no match for the moral relativism that had been ingrained in my mind since I had picked up my first “Cosmopolitan” magazine. Using birth control wasn’t as bad as abortion, right? It didn’t count as a life if the fertilized egg was unable to implant itself, right? Life doesn’t really start at conception, right? I’m only sleeping with one guy…it’s not like it’s the whole football team, right? It’s not like I am cheating on this guy with someone else, right? I love this guy, so it’s not wrong, right? It can’t be that big a deal in God’s eyes as long as I end up marrying this guy, right? This will be the last time, right?

Nothing changed. I just kept finding better excuses for what I kept doing. Sure, my conscience was getting louder and louder…but I still refused to change my life.

Then one night, everything changed. That night, in the middle of the night, I had a powerful experience that still remains a vivid memory. I am sure that it was a warning from God. He must have taken pity on my tortured conscience and seen some potential in a soul wounded by so much sin, indifference, and lies. I remember experiencing, for a dark moment that seemed like an hour, I felt true agony and despair. In that moment, I felt what it was to be unloved by God. I FELT a separation between me and God that was irreversible. Forget fire and brimstone, this is what Hell was like. I felt like I was a hole, surrounded by nothing. Something was missing from within me and something was missing around me…something central and irreplaceable….something I needed. I felt like I was trapped in some void. I don’t remember if my eyes were open or closed for this moment, but I remember seeing nothing but blackness. There was no color. There was no light. I saw nothing. I heard nothing. I felt nothing. I felt detached from the world, detached from my boyfriend sleeping beside me. I felt detached from everything, and yet, I felt an intense longing for what I was missing. This yearning would have destroyed me had it lasted longer. I knew instantly that God was that central element missing from that moment.

I don’t know how long I lay there, re-evaluating my past decisions, the lies I had accepted, the lies I had lived. However, I do remember, at one point, shooting up from my bed and going to the bathroom. There, I cried and begged God to give me the strength to do what I had to do. I knew that I would have to tell my boyfriend. I knew that I would be making some drastic changes to my life that would impact him as well. I was, however, afraid to love him. Still, there’s nothing like a warning from God Himself to help you overcome your trepidation. I resolved to tell him in the morning and I played the words I would need to say, over and over again in my mind. By the time morning came, I was still convinced that my boyfriend would leave me after I said what needed to be said.

Ladies, the moment my boyfriend accepted my decision to strive for chastity was the moment where I knew he truly loved me and the moment I realized that I truly loved him as well. Not all men would be willing to give up an active sexual life for their girlfriends. Then again, not all men are capable of truly loving and respecting the women they are with. On a similar note, not all men deserve the women they are with. Sometimes it’s tricky to tell who is who…but the selflessness my boyfriend showed is something I’ve never forgotten.

I can’t say that it has been an easy road for us, but it’s been worth it. The “Sex and the City” culture out there may tell you that you need a sex in order to enjoy a healthy relationship…but it’s a lie. There are far more important things to a relationship. I am living proof of this. Since I became committed to chastity, I’ve given up the pill, I’ve given up condoms, I’ve given up living under the same roof as my boyfriend, and I’ve given up sex. Giving these things up these things has made me more free than I was in the years where I was either a slave to third-wave feminist ideals, the years where I had to pop a pill every day at a certain hour, and the years where I had to rush off to a pharmacy for another pregnancy test. For the first time, in a long time, I am comfortable with myself. I don’t need sex to be empowered. I don’t care about the “perfect sex life” advertised by all those magazines. I don’t care about how “conventional” I am. Furthermore, I don’t have to worry about my health (cholesterol decreased, bruises gone, and migraines disappeared once I got off the pill). I don’t even have to worry about proving myself … I feel great, self-confident, loved, and happy. I feel like my conscience is at rest. I no longer have to play with the double-edged sword of moral relativism….nor do I have to continue debating with my conscience every time I see my boyfriend.

Since incorporating chastity into our relationship, my boyfriend and I have matured quite a lot. We are more empathetic and understanding of one another when it comes to particular matters (the small, but essential things that are often ignored in a typical relationship). We have grown to better understand one another and communicate with one another. We no longer have to worry about trusting one another. We have grown to better appreciate our time with each other. I know that I am happier with him now than I ever was before because I no longer feel the self-disgust and fears that I used to feel when we were sleeping together. I no longer feel many of the things that forced me to keep secrets from him and forced me to keep lying to myself.

It’s been quite a few years since I started tearing apart all of the lies I had been fed by all those “feminist” groups. In these years, I have come to learn quite a lot about myself and my boyfriend. He treats me with respect and selfless love, which is more important to me than the ideas of “sexual liberation.” Sex has become more than just a tool for empowerment or “something else to do when you’re bored.” It has turned into a beautiful act that should be cherished and saved for the right moment. There are few things that I regret as much as my decision to not wait until marriage. I can’t take this decision back, but I hope that some of you out there may learn from my mistakes.

7 (somewhat) Quick Takes

I know in the blogging world the "7 Quick Takes" post is supposed to be done on Fridays, but I figure since I've never actually participated in them and at this moment I have a lot of random thoughts, I'd give it a try.

1. This weekend was really tough. I realized on Saturday while driving down to CS that I even though I had managed to tell Husbandy "I don't want you to go" everyday for the last two weeks (just like I did before last semester), I hadn't had a good cry about it yet. This was weird to me cause last semester there had been a couple of nights and other random times that I had cried over the thought of him being gone for so long. At that moment I thought, "I don't feel like I'm going to cry, last semester went by pretty quickly, I can do this!" Wrong. Saturday night I lost it. Luckily, Husbandy was there to comfort me, but that wasn't the case Sunday as I was driving away. I think I held it together (sun glasses on) while telling him bye, but the second I was out of site I cried. Silly me, I let myself get used to him being around everyday. :p It's only the first night and I already miss him so much. Last time things got a little easier as I started to get used to the lifestyle, so hopefully that happens again.

Saint Joseph, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Augustine of Hippo, and Saint Joseph of Cupertino please intercede for Jason this semester. As the patron saints of students and test takers, as well as Jason's confirmation saint I know you are the people to have on our side. :)  I ask that these prayers are said through Christ our Lord.

2. While at Mass today it hit me, one especially good thing about this semester and me going down to CS more often is that I'll get to go to St. Mary's. I. Love. St. Mary's. Everything about it is so uplifting. The priests there are amazing, the music there is awesome, but the thing I love the most is the congregation. Too often at Mass in Dallas I am disappointed by the lack of participation. But at St. Mary's there are 1100 other people (plus another however many other people go to different Mass times) fervently participating. Additionally, the people there want to be there. The students are no longer going to Mass because their parents make them go. They go to be a part of the community and to worship with the Church. Awesome! It's so encouraging to know there is youth with this kind of passion and spirit for the Lord. I love it, it brings tears to my eyes to hear the prayers being said and the songs being sung by so many people at once. St. Mary's has impacted my life in so many ways, the people, the priests. I'm lucky to have that kind of parish in my life, and am so glad Husbandy and I got married there! If it were an hour away from Dallas I'd be there every Sunday.

3. I think this is why I am also so passionate about Texas A&M. The community there is like no other place I've ever seen. The sports are good, the education is great, but when I was deciding where I wanted to go to college, the spirit at A&M is what blew me away. I love it. I think the saying "From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. From the inside looking out, you can't explain it," says it all. I love that university, the ways it molds students into better people, the traditions it holds (Muster and Silver Taps to name a couple), the spirit it brings. One thing I can't fathom is when someone says they don't like A&M. I'm sorry, I just can't understand it. I know everyone loves the school they went to and that's fine. Really, I hope a person likes the school they went to, if not, they really missed out. There are so many schools to choose from, there has got to be one that fits everyone. But how can someone not like a university that holds such high standards for it's faculty, staff, students, and duty to its country. When the bonfire fell in 1999 it amazed me how the university came together. I love this quote from the former Vice Student Body President of UT:

"I learned something tonight. For all us Longhorns who discount A&M in our neverending rivalry, we need to realize one thing. Aggieland is a special place, with special people. It is infinitely better equipped than us at dealing with a tragedy such as this for one simple reason. It is a family. It is a family that cares for its own, a family that reaches out, a family that is unified in the face of adversity; a family that moved this Longhorn to tears. My heart, my prayers, and the heart of the UT student body go out tonight to Aggies and their family and friends as they recover from this great loss. Texas A&M, the Eyes of Texas are Upon You--and they look with sincere sympathy upon a family that has been through so much tragedy this semester."

I love A&M and everything it stands for. I'm proud to be Fightin' Texas Aggie and always will be.

4. Have I told you how much I love my niece? Every time I see her, I think I love her more. The other night I was holding her and she was intently starring at some angel figurines my mom has, so I said the Angel of God in her ear four or five times. I love these little moments. She has captured my heart.

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love entrusts me here. Ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

5. While driving home Sunday from CS, I thought about how awesome my family is. From my immediate family, to my aunts and uncles, to my cousins, to my in laws. Everyone is so encouraging. I'm so proud of everyone. This weekend I went and watch my cousin's band play. It's really cool to see how great of a guy he's becoming and how talented he is. I'm proud to say we're related. My mom is overcoming a lot of obstacles this summer, I'm glad she is one step closer to moving on. My sister and her Jason have impressed me with their faith. The thought they are putting into the sacrament of marriage is encouraging. My brother and his wife are teaching me what it is to be parents. They are learning of parental sacrifices. Husbandy is impressing me with his determination. He always has. That's obviously not even close to everyone, but my family is pretty stellar.

6. Also while driving home, I busted out my iPod which I haven't listened to in a while. I'm not sure why I don't use it more, I just don't. I heard songs I forgot even existed. It makes me slightly more excited about my six hour roadtrips each weekend. I was reminded of artists like Ten Shekel Shirt, Chris Tomlin, Matt Maher, Shawn McDonald. I actually found myself skipping a lot of songs so I could hear more of theirs. I need to re-download iTunes to my computer so I can update my playlist. I had iTunes on Husbandy's computer, but he had to wipe it. If you know how to get it back with all my songs let me know. :)

7. I do cherish this time I have with my mom. Not a lot of people get this sort of opportunity. I am getting to know her heart a little more than I did and our relationship is growing. I've always been close to my mom, but this time is showing my how great of a woman she is. She encourages me to be a better person.

Wow, it's really late. There's probably tons of corrections in this post that need to be made, but I'm tired. You get my point though, I'm sure. :)

August Rush

WOW! It's has been a LONG time since I've been on here.

August has been a whirlwind of a month. It began, in what was technically July, at a wedding. The wedding was filled with wonderful family and friends. Some of the people there we hadn't seen in a while, and it was so so good to catch up. They all kept us laughing and we danced until we were kicked out! We then "resumed" the party at my cousins house (it included a movie and most of the girls falling asleep).

Work made the beginning of the month interesting with transitions and shortened weeks. I worked the longest hours I've had to work since being there! Jason kindly pointed out that they weren't nearly as long as the long hours I was working at PwC though. He was most certainly right!

I worked the long hours knowing vacation was right around the corner. I think this was the most ready I've been for a vacation in a while. Since starting at Merit I had only taken 3 days off, and not even at the same time, so vacation sounded good.

On Tuesday the 16th we were on our way to Florida! It had been a year since we were there last, so it was good seeing Jason's family. When we got to Orlando, Jason's parents picked us up and we headed of to Fort Desoto (St. Pete's) to camp! We were slightly disappointed by the campsite cause we thought we were going to be on the beach. As it turned out we were more on the backwaters of the Gulf and it made it feel like we were on the lake. Even if this was the case, Jason, his dad, and Weo were fishing in no time.

Sidenote: Fun story about saltwater fishing licenses in FL...if you're a resident it costs you $.50 for the year, if you're a non-resident it costs you $18 for three days! Ridiculous!!

I got a lot of sun with Jason's sister and was able to relax. Well, I take that back, a lot of the time I was worrying what critter was going to join me in my chair. During the day squirrels stalked you if you ate outside, or if you were just sitting there. One time Jason's mom and I were sitting outside and I felt something hit my chair....I looked to the right, and a squirrel was on my chair about to crawl in my lap. All I can remember is seeing a little squirrels head right by me. EEW. At night it was the raccoons you had to worry about. One came up about 5 feet from Jason's dad and started eating Jason's dessert. Another one opened a roped shut cooler and stole our brownies! I'm telling you, they were some bold rodents.

Thankfully we had a boat and were able to go find a real beach. It was fun watching Jason fish cause I know he loves it so much. While boating back to our campsite we saw dolphins, and they were super close! They are such beautiful animals, luckily that wasn't their only appearance.

Camping was fun, but we got out of there a day early. Me with tons and tons and tons and mosquito bites (Seriously, I probably had about 150. At first they didn't look so bad, then they got redder and redder. I think my body freaked out cause I had so many. I'm still strictly sticking to pants, which is hot in the Texas heat, but hope that will change before the first Aggie football game!) and Jason on the hunt for a new wedding ring. :( His original is currently somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico. That was a shock when he nonchalantly asked me "Oh, do you have my wedding ring?" "Nooooo" "Oh, crap." That didn't make for a good day, needless to say I was a little mad. I'm now torn between if he should get the same ring, or a different one. On one hand I feel like he should get the same one cause a different one would be weird, on the other hand I like other bands more than his old one and he's open to getting a new one this time around. Either way I'm happy we had the ring insured. I know Jason felt really bad and he's promised it will never happen again. ;)

Once back in Lakeland we saw lots of family and hung out with Jason's best friend from childhood, Jared. It was really good to see his family, so many came over to his parent's house to say hi which was really nice. It was also really good to see Jared. He's a lot of fun, and is really turning his life in a good direction.

After more relaxing days around the house and playing Wii Fit, it was time to leave. :( We had so much fun and will hopefully see his family in May when Jason graduates!

I was really bad a taking pictures, here are some of the few did take:

The month ended on a sad note, as Jason had to go back to College Station. It was sooo good having him home for the summer. He brings so much joy to the house, and got a lot of stuff done for my mom. I think she might miss him just as much as I'm going to (even if she says I'll miss him more :p ).

I'm in high hopes that the semester will go by fast as it is football season. If you're in Dallas and are EVER going to CS, let me know cause we can definitely go together!

I just have to keep reminding myself after this semester is over I'll get to have him home for Christmas break, then he goes back for one more semester, and then we'll settle down somewhere in Dallas. I'm talking about buying a house and having babies!

Hope your August was filled with blessings! Maybe with Jason gone I'll find more time to update yall about the oh so exciting stories of my life.

A Few of My Favorite Things

A few days ago, my good friend, Courtney, posted a list of her 50 favorite things. I was inspired, so I made a list of my own 51 favorite things. So here it is, in no particular order....

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens. No wait, those were Fraulein Maria's favorite things.

Ok, here's mine...

1. Husbandy being home for the summer 2. Getting ready for work without my husband sleeping 3. Being able to spend extra time with my mom 4. My niece!! 5. Girls nights 6. Thursday night dinner 7. I was Summoned

This past week I had to do something I've never done before. Jury Duty! I wasn't too thrilled about it when I got the summons, but I had never been before so I figured it could be kinda exciting. I did have a slight fear that I would be ruling a "Casey Anthony" trial though. Either way, Wednesday I packed myself up and took the DART downtown. My summons told me to get there 45 minutes early, so I did, though once there I found out there really was no reason for that what-so-ever. All it made me do was sit in a chair for 45 minutes longer. Ok, so the actual jury duty part of my day was rather boring. I was relieved to hear that any case I may have had to hear would not be punishable by jail time, only fines, but no one must have wanted a trail by jury that day cause no one in the room was ever called. I sat in that room all day, watching CNN. Boring.... One man did make the room laugh (or just me) when we found out we had at least 30 more minutes of waiting by saying"Soo, any one want to play charades?" That could have actually be fun. I also appreciated that we were thanked by several people for coming and exercising our rights in our free country.

The real fun part of my day was the DART. When I worked at PWC I used to take the DART everyday, so that wasn't new, I wasn't even taking a different line to get downtown. But you never know what you are going to see....

I was on the DART and in walks that little number. My first thought was really? As soon as we were out of the tunnel, I pulled out my phone, made it look like I was looking at the news, turned off my flash, and took a picture. I really wish the bags weren't in the way...I do think they take away some of the cheetahness of this outfit. I would love to know where she was going....

I got out of jury duty around 4, so I was able to make it to the DART station right before the work rush hit. That was nice, but the train was full enough to where every pair of seats had one taken. My choices were to either stand, or sit by someone. I should have just stood like I opted to do in the morning, but didn't. I sat down by a girl who was probably 16 and the following conversation between her and her friends ensued...and they were yelling....

Girl: Seriously, there are all these seats on the train and she chooses to sit by me?!
Friend 1: Well it's ah train she can sit whur she wants.
Girl: Why couldn't she have sat right thur? (pointing to seat in front of her)
Friend 1: Maybe she didn't want to sit by a man.
Friend 2: (looking at me) It's ok I wouldn't want to sit by hur either, do you want to sit right hur?
Me: (thinking I don't really want to move, nor do I have to) No.
Friend 1: Maybe she paaaaid for a ticket, did you paaaay for a ticket.
Me: Yes. (technically I didn't, you get a free ride with your jury summons)
Friend 1: Oh, see, yuh, she paaaaid for hur ticket, she's gonna fight for hur seat. She can sit whur she wants.

At this point I am feeling a little bit awkward, but want to prove a point, so I just sit there. The friends continued to be obnoxious talking (yelling) about the boys they hooked up with and calling girls rude names. All I could think was, "Wow, I pray my kids are more considerate than this." I also enjoyed watching the lady sitting across from me and the girl, she just furled her eyebrows looked at her and continuously shook her head.

Luckily, they exited before me, but I was thankful to get to my stop. Once in my car, I was getting situated, and all of a sudden heard a voice outside my window. I have no clue where this man came from, there was no one around me two seconds earlier, but he scared the bajeebuz out of me. As soon as I looked up I starting shaking my head to tell the man no, I'm sorry, I don't really want to speak to you, and started to back out. With that, he walked a little towards my car and started to talk louder. At that point I was a bit frazzled and couldn't actually hear what he was saying. He then took out a pen and wrote down my license plate number! Ummm creepy!!!! I have no idea why he would need that, but I don't think I'll be parking in that parking lot for a while.

I have some other good DART stories from when I worked at P-Dub, I'll have to bust them out some other time. I hope I didn't freak you out with the last story, I do like the DART, and recommend it. Just stay away if you think it's going to be a late night, or remember, safety in numbers!

Brooklyn Michaeline Vrla

This past Thursday, July 7, 2011, the first grand baby was born into our family, my first niece! It was such an amazing day filled with tears, love and joy.

On Wednesday night around 11:40, as Husbandy and I were laying in bed, my phone made a noise telling me I received a message. Because it was so late I figured it was a email, so I didn't bother looking at it. The next morning I woke up to knocking at our bedroom door. It took me a while to figure out what was going on, but eventually I was coherent enough to tell my mom to come in.

"Nancy's 6-7 cm, so I'm going to head up to the hospital," she said.

"What?!?"

"Bryan sent out a text last night saying they were headed that way, did you not get it?"

Apparently what I thought was an email was actually a very important text from my brother! I later realized it was actually kind of better I didn't read it, it kept my mom up all night texting back and forth with my brother for any updates. Despite her lack of sleep, she was off to Baylor Hospital.

I woke up Husbandy and let him know what was going on and he said, "Ok, well let me know when something happens."

"When something happens?!? It's already happening!"

"Wait, what did you say?"

Haha he obviously wasn't all the way awake. When I told him again what was going on, he was out of bed and in the shower before I could blink. He had previously ok'ed it with his company that he could go to the hospital when Nancy was having the baby, so he sent an email saying he wasn't coming in, and left for the hospital.

I was a little bit more in a bind. That day was right in the middle of a busy week at work, so I had a lot to do. I decided to get to work as soon as I could and work until Husbandy called me saying you better leave. At that time it was right around 6:10, I was out the door at 6:45. That is definitely the quickest I have ever gotten ready for work!

I worked for about an hour before other people started showing up. As soon as my senior got to work I told her the situation; she was so excited and happy and said I could go anytime I needed to. Husbandy was a little disappointed that I didn't make these arrangements before. Either way I worked diligently until about 9:30 when Husbandy sent me a text, IM, and called me to tell me Nancy was 8cm. When he called I was in the middle of doing something that I had to do that day and quickly. Because I knew Nancy was progressing I started to get really anxious. I was so anxious it was hard for me to concentrate, but I knew what I was doing affected a lot of other people, so I focused as much as I could. I finished up what I needed to do around 10:00, walked into my senior's cube and told her I was going to go. I am so incredibly thankful for my job and the flexibility it gives me. My senior knew I had things I needed to get done before Monday, but she trusted me enough to get them done on my time. I know if I was still in public accounting I would not have been heading to the hospital by 10:05.

I walked into the labor and delivery room and was so happy to see my family, but it was then the waiting game began. Around 11:40 we were kicked out of the room so Nancy could get some rest. Since I really hadn't eaten anything other the almonds, I went to the cafeteria to eat some lunch. Husbandy and my mom tagged along. I was actually quite surprised by how good the taco salad I had was! Who knew there was good food in a hospital. :P At 12:45 we got a text saying they were starting to push! Yea!! It's going to be soon!!

Eeehh, not so fast... over the next couple of hours we did a lot of sitting in the waiting room, playing of angry birds, eating of lunch for Husbandy, and walks to the labor and delivery room to listen through the door.

At around 4:15 my mom decided it was her turn to go and listen through the door. Three minutes later we get a text saying, "I hear a baby!" Everyone went a little crazy knowing that Brooklyn had arrived, then we went a little crazier when we received our first picture!!! Knowing my mom was in the room with Bryan, Nancy, her mom, and Brooklyn was a little tough, but my Aunt finally got a text saying the girls could come in!

I can't even explain the feeling when I walked into the room. So much joy, love, and excitement! About 45 minutes later the boys were invited in and the pictures commenced. The rest of the day was spent giving Brooklyn all our love.

Seeing my brother and Nancy with Brooklyn is such an inspiration. I know they are going to be amazing parents, their whole bodies beam with love around Brooklyn.

Husbandy is also incredibly cute with our niece. A day hasn't gone by where he hasn't asked if we can go see her. He has set his phone background to a picture of her. Sometimes we find ourselves getting each other's attention, turning on his phone to her picture, looking at each other, and smiling. Our friends joke that when we have our first, he's going to have a constant slide show going on his phone for everyone to see. He's so proud of her, and it's incredibly encouraging.

My friend told me when she met her first niece it was instant love. I couldn't say it better in any other way, I love that little girl so much. I can't wait to see her grow and be her Aunt. God has given our family such a blessing. I pray for her and her health everyday, I pray that she will come to love the Lord, and that I may be a constant Christ-like presence in her life.

Brooklyn, you are loved.

Vote Yes, Vote Yes, Vote for Independency!

A million points for you if you know what my title is from! (without using the link!)

This year the 4th felt much like our last couple of 4th of Julys. Not that that's a bad thing, cause that means it was filled with amazing friends, family and food!

Sunday morning, which was technically the 3rd of July, Husbandy got up super early and worked on his car. He had it lifted, wheels off, and tools everywhere. I got to help with minor things, but he did ALL the grunt work. He never ceases to amaze me with his stellar abilities. After cleaning up, we went to my dad's to see some family who were in town for a couple of hours. It was great seeing them and hearing about family happenings! After that we headed to Mass and met up with some of our friends. From there we were off to Kaboom Town!

Kaboom Town was... hot. Luckily, we had a friend willing to go early and score a spot under a tree. We were very thankful for the shade. One thing about sitting under tree... you never know when a baby bird will fall from a nest onto your lap! This happened not only once, but twice during the day. They also proceeded to hop all over our picnic blanket, one even managed to hop right through our ranch dipping sauce. It made for an interesting afternoon.  :)

The food...ooh the food. How I love fruit, vegetables, tuna salad, pasta salad, salsa, chips, too moist cake, and vodka watermelon! Y-U-M!! The vodka watermelon still wasn't as good as I want it to be though. Husbandy and I are assigned (or we volunteer) to bring it every year and have yet to perfect it. I guess it's hard to perfect something when you do it once a year. :)

The night ended of course with fireworks! I just love fireworks with patriotic music. It makes me feel so proud to be an American!

We spent the actual 4th of July at my Papa Joe's house.

Sidebar: Papa Joe is the other half of Meemaw, just for reference. He deserves his own post, cause he's one of the most respectable men I know.

We brought all the fixings for burgers and he (along with Husbandy and my brother) grilled them. I haven't seen Papa Joe in too too long, I am so glad I got to visit with him.

A break from work is always good, but being able to celebrate our freedom makes the 4th of July especially good. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!!

The Internet - It's Not So Bad

Many of you may already know this story, or at least a version of it; but when I think about all that had to happen for Husbandy and I to meet, I can't help but see God's hand in it. I also want it to be written down so that it may never be forgotten. :)

In August 2002 I had just started my senior year in high school and could not wait for it to be over so I could begin my life as an Aggie. Back in those days there was no Facebook, AIM was the way to communicate. AIM had been out for a while, but my family was always behind the technology curve, so we just got it and I was all about it.

Little did I know, but two years earlier there was sneaky little teenage boy in Florida who had decided to play a joke on his friend (aka Husbandy) and searched for girls on AIM named Sarah to fill his entire buddy list. One of those Sarah's happened to be a good friend of mine. Sarah and Husbandy talked on and off for two years just as online friends. Isn't that crazy?! Imagine how many Sarahs there are in the world, and one of the ones that end up on a random guys buddy list is my friend. Not only that, but this Sarah is one of the only ones he actually kept in contact with.

Fast forward to 2002...Sarah and Husbandy decided it would be a good idea to exchange pictures. Because she didn't have one of herself on her computer, Sarah asked me to send her one. However, the only one I had of her also had me and another girl in it. After exchanging pictures, Sarah asked Husbandy to guess which girl in the picture she sent was her. That's a pretty tough question for a guy, so he did exactly what any guy would have done and guessed which girl he thought to be the prettiest. That girl was me! Again, crazy. This of course is the only way God would have planned it, but I didn't think I was the prettiest girl in the picture. A little annoyed Sarah told me the story and sent me the picture she had received of him.

After seeing his picture, I thought Husbandy was also pretty cute, so I got his screen name. (Please don't ask what our screen names were....they were pretty ridiculous!!) Husbandy and I talked all the time. You can ask my good friend Lauren about that. She was really the only person I hung out with in high school, so she of course was constantly hearing about my IM conversations with this guy in Florida.

After about a month of talking online, we decided all that typing was getting old and moved our conversations to the phone. For the next four months Husbandy and I talked on the phone every night. Lauren also heard a lot of these conversations. I can remember being at her house and having to stop what we were doing so I could talk to him. I'm sure she thought I was crazy, but she was also very supportive.

On December 23, 2002 Husbandy was flying to Lake Tahoe to visit family, and conveniently had a layover in Dallas! This was obviously the perfect time to meet each other, so I convinced Lauren (safety in numbers) to go with me to the airport. I spent the night at her house (along with another one of her friends) and we got up super early to leave. At this point no parentals knew of Husbandy (not a good choice, future children), so I'm sure we made up a really good story for Lauren's parents explaining where we were going so early. Whatever it was worked cause we were out the door and on our way! Unfortunately for me, it was raining that morning so traffic was horrible. I weaved my way in and out of lanes determined to be at the airport on time. Once we got there, there was Husbandy, with a stuffed Eeyore in hand. I thought that was so sweet. :)

By this point, we had seen several pictures of each other so we knew exactly who we were looking for. We had also learned a lot about each other over the past 5 months and had a genuine love for each other. I remember our first hug just felt right and comfortable. It was a little surreal that I was actually meeting this guy! Because Husbandy's next flight was a few hours away we decided to leave the airport. I had no idea what was around the area, but we found a mall. Once there, Husbandy and I lost Lauren and her friend. It was there in the mall Husbandy asked me if he could kiss me! You might think that was kinda soon, but we had been getting to know each other for 5 months. It was the best first kiss I've ever had, not a very romantic setting, but all the more memorable.

Before we knew it, it was time for Husbandy to leave. While saying our goodbyes and taking some pictures, he gave me a beautiful gold and diamond bracelet. I was in shock. That was definitely the first time a boy had given me jewelry!

I would say they didn't take the news very well. I mean, I understood where they were coming from; meeting someone online does not always end well. Like it or not, spring break of my senior year Husbandy came and stayed in Dallas, with my family. Awkward is definitely a word that describes the whole week. My dad immediately fell in love with Husbandy as he grew up working in construction. Dad saw him as someone who was strong and willing to work on projects around the house. My mom did not take to him as well. I know she tried to be open to the situation, but Husbandy had to work hard to win her over. (I would venture to say the winning didn't happen for at least another year)

After that visit Husbandy was committed, he talked more and more about moving to Texas. At first I thought it would never happen, but as I saw him working two jobs and saving money, I knew the move was possible. In August of 2003 I started as a freshman at Texas A&M University (AAAAAA!), that very same month Husbandy moved half way across the US, to College Station, Texas.

Despite initial concerns of friends and family, there we dated for 5 years! Husbandy is now of course loved by everyone, and I know for a fact he is their favorite of any boy of mine they met. He's definitely my favorite too!!

How Great Thou Art

This past Sunday in Mass, the meditation song after receiving the Eucharist was How Great Thou Art. Immediately after it started I thought "Yes! I love this song!" I promptly found it in the hymnal with every intention to sing along. When I finally found the page, I opened my mouth to sing, but it wasn't words that came out of my mouth, it was tears coming from my eyes. "Why am I crying?" I thought. "This is a really powerful song, but I want to sing it!" And then it hit me, this song reminds me of Meemaw.

Meemaw is my maternal grandmother who passed away in 2008. She was the epitome of what a grandmother should be - warm, loving, caring, giving, joyful, gentle, faithful - I could go on and on. Meemaw played piano at her church for years, this was one of her favorites. I just knew she was up in Heaven playing it as we sang.

From that moment on, I sang when I could get the words out, but I mostly just remembered Meemaw. Our family gatherings are definitely not the same without her, but she is always remembered. For now I know she is enjoying constantly praising the Lord with all the saints and angels and sending down her love and encouragement.

Singing Christmas Carols

Cousins and Meemaw - June 2007

O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

2 Thessalonians 2:16

I have been thinking about starting a blog for what seems like two years now. So why has it taken me this long to get something going? Well, what's a blog without a title? I knew I wanted it to be something that encompasses my life. Titles such as The Wagner Way and I Could not Ask for More came to my mind, but they never sounded right. I didn't think about it 24/7, but it has seriously been in the back of my mind for two years.

It finally occurred to me that the verse I've had on my personal email for the longest time is such an inspiration to me.

"May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word."

This verse brings me so much hope. The Lord, Our Savior, gives us everlasting encouragement! And gives us the strength needed to be fervent servants for Him everyday. I then thought about what this means to me in my everyday life, and how Jason and I needed to be encouraging to each other. Our first two years of marriage have been full of encouragement, two big examples of this are how he encouraged me to find a new job that made me happy and I encouraged him to get his Masters. I also thought about our future family and how we are going to have to give encouragement to our children, from their first roll over to their first job. Not only that but they will be encouragers to us as they push us to be better parents. Our lives are full of everlasting encouragement, not to mention everything we get from our family and friends.

I know we won't see the encouragement as evident everday, but hopefully having this blog will be a reminder. It may especially remind me to be the encourager the Lord has called me to be by his grace.

Aside from that, why am I starting this blog? I have no little one, and therefore there will be no stories about their first roll, crawl, word, or the funny and cute thing they did. At least not yet. I don't have a job that would make for fun story, unless you want to hear about the excel problem I tackled. Really I just want a place I can write down my thoughts and tell a story. If your're interested in reading about them, then great! I know Jason and I have big things to look forward to in the future, this will just help serve as documentation of our journey.
